David Hanvald (1980) presents his work called Deceive the Heavens and Traverse the Sea. Qi Baishi provided the impulse for the exhibition in Galerie Zdeněk Sklenář; especially artworks from 1930–1950, the foundation of which had been nature. The Czech artist saw Qi Baishi’s art in Beijing in 2017 when Zdeněk Sklenář invited him there for a residential stay. “The composition of his motifs was important for me, the same as their certain generosity. He does not break up into redundant detail and short strokes. With respect to his plant motifs, I like that something is left unsaid and the stylisation which is far away from reality,” says Hanvald regarding his inspiration by the Chinese artist. Hanvald shows a selection of his most recent sets Canvases and Papers. David Hanvald’s artworks are based on interconnected coloured curves which captivate with their directedness and balance on the edge of abstraction. They are characterised by original style, each stroke of which is an expression of the painter‘s private and emotional gesture
